As a mother of a 12 year old girl, I find it repulsive the articles of clothing that are being marketed to girls this age as "fashionable." Skirts that are inches below the bottom, sweaters and tops that are cut way too low, t-shirts with innuendos across the front, and sweat pants with words written across the behind. Really? For a 10 - 13 year old?
Recently, my daughter and I attended a conference where they talked about modesty for young ladies. We went home and started sorting through her closet. We put together a few outfits for fun. She likes to wear these outfits regularly, and we thought it would be fun to share them with you.
Remember these guidelines moms and dads:
1) if you put your hand on your collar bone and you can see below it, your neckline is too low.
2) if you can stand up straight and your skirt doesn't reach the tip of your middle finger, your hem line is too short.
3) If you reach for the sky and your belly shows, your shirt is too short.
4) If you bend over to pick up a lucky penny and your shirt rides up in the back, your pants wasteband is too low, or your shirt is too short.
These are just guidelines, but I think they're good measures toward modesty.
And now for the fashion show!
First we have a green and tan skirt that can also be worn as a sun dress. This is paired with a white t-shirt and a sparkly tan scarf for effect. Tan shoes and a taupe hand bag complete the ensemble.
Second, we have a gray and black sweater dress. Alone, it would be too short, but paired with black denim leggings and a pair of black flats and you're ready for a day at the mall or a Friday night out.
Thirdly, we have a blue and pink skirt, also can be worn as a sundress, paired with a navy blue summer sweater. This neck line would be too low, so we pair it with a white tank with lace trim, a pair of white sandals and the outfit is complete. Great for a casual Sunday at church.
Here we have a green and blue skirt that also can be worn as a sundress, a yellow tank paired with a white shrug, white sandals and a bright yellow purse. This is a great summer Sunday outfit.
For an evening at the mall, mini-golfing, or seeing a movie, these tan pants and blue Aeropostale t-shirt are paired with a white sweater, a pair of cute flats and the evening is a go...
This striped sweater dress would be too short by any means, so we paired it with a pair of denim leggings, brown flats and a bright fruit themed hand bag. Great, fun outfit for the tween in your life.
Next we have a navy denim dress-top. It has a fun gingham belt. We paired with with tan pants and brown flats. Great for Sunday worship, Wednesday night Bible study or a day at the mall with friends.
Last but not least, and our personal favorite, the purple sweater dress. This is also paired with black denim leggings, black bow flats, a taupe purse with a fun purple flower attachment. This outfit gets worn ALL THE TIME. She wears it to church, to after-school functions, to dinner out with friends, etc. It's fun, it's casual, and it's comfortable.
Look through your closets and see what fun outfits you can mix and match. If a dress has gotten a little too short, pair it with a pair of leggings to extend it's life. This is a great fall look. Summer items can be extended with a long sleeved t-shirt beneath, or a sweater on top.
You don't have to spend a million bucks to look like you did!
